Some exciting news...

I haven't been blogging so much lately since I have been spending most of my free time working the summer craft shows with SalonDArte, making ornaments, tweaking my display and preparing the for upcoming big holiday craft shows. But I have also been feeding my creative muse by having some play time and trying out some new things...several months back I became part of the Unscripted Sketches Design Team...and...drumroll please...

I have super awesome news!!!

I am proud to announce that I have been selected to be part of an awesome group of artists & crafters! It is beyond words to explain how happy I am to be part of this group of talented stamp artisans. WOW! This is an awesome adventure that I am setting off on and I invite everyone to come along for the ride.

SalonDArte vending at Beat Cup Craft Fair on July 31st

Sorry I haven't been blogging too much lately. I been working really hard, making things and preparing to get SalonDarte shop into the local Indie craft show scene [and don't forget the day job]. I've have been doing one craft show, Dada Bazaar, the past three months and it been great - especially to get my feet wet, and I'm doing some design work for the event. It's so great to see my postcard art blown up to poster size hanging up at the venue.

Save the date...I'll be at the Beat Cup Craft Fair in Delray Beach, Florida, on July 31st with SalonDArte - handmade ornaments, lanterns and other artsy goodness. I have a lot of work to do to get my display in order this weekend. I have some very artistic art in which to hang the ornaments...and a couple surprises, too. Looking forward to it, love music and artists painting in plein aire...maybe I'll do that once the weather cools down a bit. See you there : )

Greencrafted Display Boxes and OWH Bloghop Winner

My sister shop SalonDArte has branched out to the local Indie Craft shows. I am active in artfully repurposing things and my table display for the craft show is my latest conquest. I was racking my brain trying to figure out what to use to display my paper ornaments...and eureka - the tequila gave me a bright idea!!! My husband loves Milagros tequila and it comes in this fancy paperboard box, that is hard to throw away, so I've been saving them for a "special project" that my girlfriend and I can make.

Well, we were thinking lamps, but a new calling arose. LIGHTED ORNAMENT DISPLAY!!! I gently pried off the lid which already has holes in the top and bottom to nestle the bottle safely and added a battery powered LED puck light and VIOLA!!! I just had to add some fishing line to hang from and a square of pretty paper to the bottom to cover up the hole. I didn't even paint over all of the foil stamping on the outside - it sort of adds to the charm - and all the guys dragged into impromptu date night shopping think they are so cool!

This is my SalonDArte booth at the Dada Bazaar on Thursday night at Dada Restaurant in Delray Beach, Florida. This is a monthly event with 15-20 vendors and live music at this restuarant that resides in a historical house. I have to admit I feel quite at home at this venue with it's laid back atmosphere, porches to lounge on and it's cool, artsy vibe.

I'm so happy it's the weekend again so I can catch up on my ZZZ's, going to the "Trash to Treasure" warehouse and take some time revisiting some of my new crafty friends I met online last weekend. Geared up for Operation Write Home's Memorial Day Bloghop 2011

Welcome to this stop on Operation Write Home's Memorial Day Bloghop 2011 . This is my third year participating...thanks for joining us in celebrating!!! Our family is so proud and grateful for all of our men and women serving in the armed forces. My youngest sister and her hubby are in the Army National Guard and her husband was deployed to Afghanistan in April. So we are keeping ourselves busy making cards and sending care packages.

I am all GEEKED and GEARED up with my Lil' Robot Card. This card is chock full of metal bits...Can you pick out all the pieces. My favorite gem is the "MISS YOU" brad adorning the chest plate of this little guy complete with his mini fuse lunchbox. I describe more in length about this creation later in the post...

ABOUT THE ROBOT CARD...

I have recently become a member of the Design TEAM for Sketch it Saturday over at Unscripted Sketches. For sketch #107 I planned to use this guy from My Minds Eye "Lil' Robots" collection to make this card because this week had a piggyback challenge to use metals - Yippee!!! Gears and screws and washers...oh MY!

I have a serious collection of brads, grommets, screws and found metal objects from my daily travels. Can you pick out all the metal pieces I have in this???

Starting with the robot & border, these were die cuts from MME paper collection. The diamond plate background is a silver paper embossed with a cuttlebug embossing folder, then I rubbed it with green inks to tint it & enhance the diamond plate.

Get a count on all the metal bits yet??? There are a lot! And a googlie eye and a little mini fuse I found in the Publix parking lot on Thursday { so I had to use it }. Found metal objects, the large ring around the googly eye, and the washer over a T!m Holtz gear. I used a metal button, a copper colored eyelet, a bronze brad and I repurposed a drycleaning tag with two staples in it. The flat and phillips head screws are actually brads...can't remember from who {maybe Karen Foster}...and did you see the red brad BLINKIE at the top of the robot? To top off this little guy, I have some Karen Foster smiley face brads that have little phrases with them and I used the "miss you" on the chest plate of the robot. This has been rubbed with green ink to make it stand out better.

Operation Write Home

For this card, I gathered up a piece of teal cardstock, some paper scraps, a stamped cupcake from a previous project colored with Zig writers and Stickles Glitter Adhesive {I know, I know, no glitter is allowed for OWH cards - but this is only for screen viewers ONLY : ) }. The background is made from a piece of leftover craft fun foam run through my cuttlebug. So fun! I rubbed some platinum pearlescent over the embossing to bring out the detail. So quick and easy and the result is very IM"PRESS"IVE.

Aren't I clever with words?

I will be spending the weekend with friends and family and getting in some quality artsy-craftsy time with a pile of things waiting to be artfully upcycled. What projects are you working on this 3-day weekend?

Operation Write Home Memorial Day Bloghop

Welcome "Hoppers" to my page SMBdesign - which is a blog for my shop on Etsy. My name is Susan and I am so proud to participate for the second year now.

Operation Write Home began in 2007 with just a few cards made by friends on a message board; what began as an outlet for a hobby has become a much larger mission to help heroes keep in touch with home - and the effort has been joined by thousands of cardmakers!

OWH receives handmade cards donated by crafters across America (and beyond!). Cardmakers range in age, location, and level of skill; cards are provided by individuals and groups, schools and scouts, companies and churches. All have one primary thing in common: a desire to serve those who defend our nation!

Cards are mailed to one of our volunteer shippers in quanities both small and large. The shippers process, sort, repair, and document each donation, and then pack and ship boxes of over 300 cards each to our contacts. Our heroes request cards (families may also request on their behalf; we serve all branches in all deployed locations. Click Here for info on how you can participate.

My youngest sister is in the National Guard [for 2 years now] and was officially deployed on Jan. 5, 2010 from Ft. Lauderdale to report to Fort Hood for preparations to Iraq. I spent the day with her on New Year's Day in Orlando and then at the Deployment Ceremony in Ft. Lauderdale - it was such a treat!

How did you get started in your chosen craft?
I started to craft and make eco-friendly items without knowing that they were considered eco-riendly. Some might call me a pack rat, but I honestly see so many possibilities and potential in things we’d normally throw out. One of my favorite resourceful craft is converting unrecyclable plastic into a functional items, like soap dish (check out this great tut: eco-tutorial-soap disk) or birds nest magnets out of plastic bottle caps. I also started making knitted washcloths with upcycled yarn that lasted forever that I gave them out to friends and family. They loved the idea and I started making them to sell on Etsy

How do you make your craft or etsy store eco friendly?
I upcycle any fabric or yarn to sew or knit. I use up almost all the fabric scraps, like for my fabric flower brooch, I use left over pieces of yarn for hanging tags, I upcycle magazine pages to make envelopes (checkout another awesome eco-tut: eco-tutorial - recycled inner envelopes) to ship items. And When I need to buy new materials, I try to buy low impacting and sustainable materials like organic or bamboo (although bamboo has come under a lot of scrutiny lately as being not as green as we thought, it’s still better than buying NEW cotton that uses hundreds of pounds of chemicals in making.)

Why did you join the EcoEtsy Team?
Because great minds think alike and we are all striving for a common goal – to save this planet. I love the fact that we exchange great earth saving ideas.

Where do you get your ideas/inspiration?
The resources I have. Artists usually have something in mind when they create but when I look at the resources I have, I think of things to create. Take the dryer balls, (she's full of them, another great tut: eco-tutorial- dryer balls) for example. I had all these orphaned socks and wanted to make something out of them instead of throwing them out or leaving them in a drawer somewhere. So I decided to make dryer balls with them. I thought other people might have the same problem so I posted here on the team’s blog.

Which piece in your shop is your current favourite?
The utensil pouch. I used to collect all those plastic take out utensils and use them when I needed them. But now, I use these utensil pouches and pack my own silverware. I eat better with real silverware rather than those flimsy plastic utensils but I am contributing to reducing all that plastic going to the landfill.

What are you currently working on?
I recently opened ‘ecokaren’ for my eco-friendly items. ‘ecogeneration’ is now for eco-friendly supplies and stashing supplies that I don’t need anymore. I am trying to stock both stores while trying to tweak my new/old blog. It’s tough working on three things at once but I am trying to stock up as much as I can before the Holiday.

What steps have you taken to lead a green life style?
My family….

· recycle

· changed all the light bulbs to CFL bulbs,

· buy things that have less packaging. (I cringe when I see cute things but are packaged to death. It’s wasteful.) We buy in bulk as much as possible.

· buy locally grown organic foods instead from California and certainly not from a foreign country. My whole family has been going to the Farmers Market on Saturdays. The kids pick out the foods and see where their foods come from. It’s a great learning experience for them as they see the ingredients of the foods they eat. They actually talk to the people who grew and harvested the vegetables, fruits, and even the meats they eat.

· try to buy items that are made from recycled materials.

· use glass instead of plastic to store things in kitchen.

· have been using reusable bags for groceries before they were fashionable.

· there are so much more but one major change we started to do was NOT buy into temptation and buy on an impulse. It creates so much unnecessary waste. We are more careful in what we purchase. I think, in the long run, that is the most eco-friendly act we can do – reduce waste.

Is your art/craft your full time job? If not what do you do to pay the bills?
Currently, it’s a hobby although it feels like a full time job. Because I just opened a second shop AND moved my blog to another platform, it’s been challenging to craft. I am always tweaking my blog, writing articles about the environment, think of eco tips and tutorials, and find ways to make it better. I started a sponsorship campaign this month to make a little money from the blog. I have many craft projects in the fire but I haven’t had the time to finish them. I am lucky enough to be able to stay home with my kids while I develop my business. I am hoping to pay my bills from the shop soon. I can’t pay their college tuition yet but I am working on it. You have to have goals, right?

What do you do when you are not crafting?
I don’t have any other exotic hobby other than crafting but when I’m not crafting, I am being a full time mom to two busy teenagers and a wife to a busy husband – in that order, my DH complains. So I guess that would be my exotic hobby, being everyone’s executive assistant.

What is the most eco-friendly purchase you have made?
All natural rubber mattress. It is the best mattress we ever bought.

New Look for Etsy Shop

Custom Banner Re-design

I have been selected to redesign an etsy shop banner and suite of shop graphics for fellow EcoEtsy team member Karen Meyers. She makes one-of-a-kind upcycled vintage and recycled woolen handmade accessories. These unique, sophisticated and sassy creations each have their own personality. I love them - ALL! This is not the best for me - being a "Bag" lady. All of her creations are must-have's. I am grateful to Karen for this opportunity to start my etsy business and to get my feet wet making the transition from print media, to the web platform.

Where this project begins:
Karen has a wonderful existing logo design with a creative symbol of her initials in lilac and brownish plum colors. Very stylish. She wants to incorporate images of her creations and has some great product photography to utilize.

After a few e-mail correspondence and a phone conversation, here are my first two options going from what we've discussed. I have learned over the years the importance of communication and in building client relationships - it helps me creatively visualize what the client has envisioned.

Memorial Day "Cards for Heroes" Bloghop

A bloghop is a blast of creativity and sharing! Bloggers from all over the US and abroad will be posting a card and sharing why THEY participate in honoring our nation's heroes. And everyone else gets inspired!

Cards for Heroes is a wonderful organization that supports armed forces serving overseas by sending them blank greeting cards for them to send home to family, as well as cards of gratitude to encourage them. This is my first event I am participating in, and I am inspired by all of the fabulous cards posted along the hop. There are lots of beautiful cards and projects, too.

On this Memorial Day Weekend - My thoughts and Prayers go out to all Service Men and Women this weekend. I remember my grandfather, who was in the Coast Guard, my father, who served in the Navy and now, my baby sister who is in the Army National Guard. Please enjoy this recipe that we made at a BBQ prior to her shipping off to bootcamp - a family favorite grilled "Firehouse Wings".

Grilled Firehouse Chicken Wings [or legs, thighs & breasts with skin left on]
Adapted from a recipe viewed on Emeril Live many years ago.

In a large bowl, mix together the following ingredients: can be adjusted to taste - we just throw together a little of this and a dash of that - really depends on how much chicken you will be making. This will do about 12-18 chicken wings.
Garlic Powder 1 Tbsp
Parsley Flakes 1-2 Tbsp
Thmye 1-2 Tbsp
and a whole small bottle of Franks Red Hot Sauce
Then add the chicken wings and thoroughly coat, and let them sit for a 1/2 hour or until you are ready to grill. Then grill as usual. They don't come out as spicy as you would expect - TASTY with a little kick! Any questions post in comment with e-mail addy to reply.

The "Lil Troops" took it all in stride. But my sister is sure sick of doing pushups : )
